Two Banquets Left!

Thousands of miles of driving, two states–thirteen banquets completed! There are only two banquets left on our spring tour of Wycliffe Associates banquets:

Jeff will be at the Springfield one alone, but we will be together for our last one in California. I arrive at 10:30 am that morning from Asia. Pray that I will be able to stay awake :) .

Thanks for all of our prayers for our banquets!

On to New York for More Banquets

Jeff left this morning to participate in four more banquets in New York.

  • April 21: Holiday Inn, 150 W Fourth Str, Jamestown, NY 14701
  • April 22: Marriot Hotel, 1340 Millersport Hwy, Amherst, NY 14221
  • April 24: Marriot Hotel, 1890 West Ridge Road, Rochester, NY 14615
  • April 25: Holiday Inn, 304 S Hamilton Str, Painted Post, NY 14870

If you would like to attend, reservations are required. Call or email Don Skekel at (800) 475-1062 or don_skekel@wycliffe.org . There is no cost for the banquet, and a complementary meal is included with every reservation. A love offering is taken at the end of each banquet and gifts go towards a Wycliffe project.

We went together in March for planning meetings for these banquets. Jeff will be doing these banquets on his own because I will be leaving to go overseas. Please join us in praying for God to provide more financial support to us through these banquets. We’re hoping to be able to go to Kenya in July, but in order to do that we need to have 100% of our financial support raised by the end of May. Please pray specifically for Jeff that God will speak through him at these banquets and that God will provide him with time to rest in the midst of this busy schedule.

Blountstown & Lady Lake

We’ve had two great banquets in the last two days–one in Blountstown (a small town in the pan handle) and one in Lady Lake (in central Florida). Dave Jackson (pictured on the right in the picture on the bottom left) has been the speaker for the last three banquets. Steve Martin, the banquet emcee is also in the picture on the bottom right. We’ve been with him for all of our Florida banquets. It’s been fun to travel with them. The picture on the top right is of Steve and Jeff unrolling a list of languages without the Bible. It’s an impressive list!

Our entertainment tonight in Lady Lake was peacocks. There were several at the location where the banquet was. They are beautiful birds, but they are loud!

Pensacola Banquet

We enjoyed our time in Pensacola. The banquet went really well. My Uncle Paul and Aunt Marie came out. Missy Schmelzenbach was there, too. We even ran into a friend (Christie Phillips) that we met when we took TOTAL It Up in 2005.

Before we left for our next location, we went to the beach–the Gulf Islands National Seashore. It was beautiful, but it was also cold. I was wearing a sweater.

Out to Pensacola

We left early this morning for the long drive to Pensacola. I never realized how far out it is! This was my (Heather) first time in the Florida panhandle. We arrived in time for the service at Brian & Missy Schmelzenbach’s church. We visited with them, the Botts and the Hastings who all used to go to church with us in Orlando. It was a great visit.

Tomorrow evening we’ll be participating in the WA banquet at Hillcrest Baptist Church, 800 East Nine Mile Road, Pensacola, FL 32514 at 7pm. There’s still space, so if you want to go, reserve a seat for yourself and your guests by calling 866-461-0197 or sending an email to steve_martin@wycliffe.org

Visiting Florida’s Capitol

Today was our first time in Florida’s capitol. The picture above is of the old statehouse. The new statehouse is the tall building behind. We’re staying with a couple while we’re here and the wife was involved in restoring the old statehouse. It was neat to hear some of the stories behind the restoration.

Our banquet tonight was at the Park Plaza hotel in downtown Tallahassee. The evenings we’ve had banquets here in Florida, typcially follow this schedule:
  • 5:30pm: We arrive at the banquet location and set up our table
  • 6-6:30pm: We assist Steve Martin (who is the Southeast Area Director for Wycliffe Associates and emcee for the banquets in Florida) with registering individuals who are hosting tables at the banquet.
  • At around 7pm Steve finds open seats for Jeff and I. We get to share a meal and visit with some banquet guests. We sat at a table of students tonight (pictured below). It was really fun to visit and talk with them!
  • 8ish: The banquet program begins. It includes some videos about why Bible translation is important and information about how individuals can be involved. Jeff and I share our stories of how we became missionaries with Wycliffe, what we will be doing, where we are going, and when we hope to go. Then the main speaker comes and shares an inspiring missions message. Brent Huelett from our church in Orlando has been the speaker (pictured below) at the last five banquets.
  • Then individuals are invited to fill out a response card and give a gift if they desire. The banquet wraps up with an invitation to come to our table and pick up resources at the Wycliffe Associates table. We sing, we pray and then it’s over by about 9pm.
  • We visit with individuals who come to our table, pass out our prayer cards and encourage each person to sign up for our bi-monthly newsletter.
  • At about 9:30 or 10pm, we pack up our stuff and help Steve with whatever else he needs before we leave.
  • We usually stay each night with a couple or family that has their name on a hospitality list for our organization. People with their names on this list open their homes to missionaries that are traveling. We make arrangements with them in advance, and they give us a room and sometimes a few meals. We’ve met some wonderful people by taking advantage of this option!

Traveling up A1A

We left Daytona this morning and drove up A1A along the coast up to Jacksonville. Above are some things we saw from the car on the way. A1A follows the barrier islands on the east coast of Florida. For a few miles, it comes inland along the edge of St. Augustine.

After St. Augustine, it goes back out to the barrier islands. We stopped at a beach in Vilano Beach, which is where we purchased our truck a couple of years ago. We actually tested our truck along this stretch of A1A. To get to the beach we had to cross a wooden bridge that goes over A1A. The beach has red sand, and it’s covered with so many shells that it’s impossible not to step on them.

Tonight we’ll be speaking at the banquet in Jacksonville, and then it’s on to Tallahassee on Saturday.

Daytona with the Brewsters

Our banquet tonight was in Daytona Beach. The location was beautiful–right on the intercoastal waterway. The room had big windows that looked out over the water.

We stayed with Woody & Evie Brewster. We worked with them in Orlando. Evie volunteered in the department I worked in. It was so nice to visit with them. Woody has planted amaryllis flowers all around their property. A few them are pictured to the left. As usual, you can click on the image to see it larger.

Cocoa Beach banquet went great

We enjoyed our time at the Cocoa Beach banquet. There were about 120 people there, and we had several come to our display table at the end of the banquet. We have Wednesday off to rest, and then Thursday we head to Daytona.
