Going coastal!
It’s time for a break. Jeff and I have been planning a short vacation on the Kenyan coast for a couple of months. Two offices within our organization in East Africa had planned their annual conferences at a hotel on the Kenyan coast, and anyone else from the organization could come to the conference location during their event and take advantage of their conference discount. A deal too good to pass up…
We drove out. Jeff actually picked me up at the airport, and we left straight from there. Since it was our first time to drive to this place, we followed someone else. The slide show will give a glimpse of our drive. It took about 8 hours from Nairobi to the hotel in Watamu. The whole way was a slow decent, from the 5000 ft that Nairobi is at down to sea level. The temperature slowly rises, the plants change and the scenery changes. We got to see lots of African bao bao trees; we don’t have those in Nairobi. We even saw a few baboons on the side of the road.
Most of the road was really nice with just a few bad patches, mostly just outside of Nairobi. Instead of driving through Mombasa (a large coastal city in Kenya), we decided to take a back road (Route C107) that went around the city (like a Mombasa beltway?). It was a dirt (sometimes mud) road that went though rural areas. The scenery was beautiful. Jeff enjoyed testing the 4WD on our car. It didn’t really save us much time, but saved us the possible headaches of Mombasa traffic.
So, we’re here for a few days. A little less time than we had planned on because I had something come up in Nairobi that I needed to go to. However, we’re hoping to relax, rest, catch up with some friends that are here, enjoy some warmer weather than we’re having in Nairobi…
