Getting Connected

The hardest part of our stay in Nairobi so far has been our lack of internet access. The guest house where we have been staying does not have it. The office does, but it is too far away to walk to with our computers. We don’t have a car, so we can only get to the office with our computers when someone picks us up. With all the other things we’ve been doing to adjust and begin to settle in somewhat, getting to the office often hasn’t been highest on the priorities. We’ve only had enough time there on-line to download our email, post some new content to the blog (which has been typed ahead in Word), do some really quick status updates on Facebook and Twitter, and make one short skype call to my parents. We’ve had about 30-45 minutes on-line total since we arrived. We’re having internet withdrawal!

However, we do have new cell phones now. Unlike in the US, we don’t have to get a contract, a particular cell phone plan, or get locked into only one provider. We can buy whatever phone we want and purchase minutes as we go from one of the local providers. We’re happy with the phones we picked out. One of them is supposed to be equipped to connect a computer to the internet. The connection would probably be slow, but could help us get our email in a pinch. Jeff is still figuring out how it would work.

So good to see what you’ve been up to after you’ve arrived. Hopefully you’ll have more consistent access and we can connect through skype soon. Hope you guys are getting used to the time difference. So glad there’s some mexican food there yay!

Hi again from the land of snow and ice! Yes, I’m sure a car will be important to have – as long as you remember to drive on the right – OOPS,CORRECT – side, and watch out for those roundabouts! If you can get in touch with Roger and Karen he might be able to guide you in the process of looking for a car. He has been through it several times over there and knows cars very well, having worked in his Dad’s transmission shop in his younger years. It sounds like you are getting off to a good start there, and also like you won’t fall asleep in church :-)
