I jumped…
…the truck! A first for me.
I left the house this morning, and something wasn’t quite right with our truck. The automatic door locks weren’t working and the window in my side was going up and down sluggishly. I made it to where I was going, and I was able to head back, but on my way back home, I decided to stop at the grocery store to pick a few things up. I was going to call Jeff to let him know that I’d be back a little later, but my cell phone was dead. I tried plugging it in, but I couldn’t draw a charge from the truck. So, I went into the store the whole time thinking, “Dear God, please let the truck start up again!” God heard my prayer, but didn’t answer it quite how I expected.
I went back out to the truck, hoping…
believing…
it must start!
It HAD to start.
Besides, now I didn’t even have a working cell phone to call someone to help!
I got in, got situated, and put the key in.
–nothing–
no click, no lights, no radio
Tried again.
–nothing–
It wouldn’t start.
But, all was not lost. I went back into the grocery store and asked to use their phone (since my phone was dead). I had decided to call Jeff.
I called home. No answer. I left a message, “Hi Jeff. It’s Heather. The truck’s dead. I’m at the store. Oh, and my cell phone is dead, too. I guess you’re not home, so I’ll try your cell.”
I called his cell. No answer. I left a message, “Hi Jeff. It’s me. Well, the truck’s dead, and my cell is dead. I’m at the store. If you get this message maybe you can meet me here, but I think I might be able to do something. So, if I get it started, I’ll drive right home and see you there.”
Hmmm…
I hadn’t remembered that Jeff wasn’t home. He was at a Bible study.
No power, no phone, no Jeff; but what if…
About a month ago, we drove out with my sister to bring her to college. My parents are letting her borrow one of their cars for the school year. In addition to helping her get there and get set up, I asked Jeff if he’d give her a little orientation to the car. I watched, too. I often watch and ask questions when he’s working on our truck, but this gave me a better opportunity just for instruction. We bought her an emergency kit for the car, and he showed her how to use the jumper cables. It was my first time really learning about that, too.
…what if I took care of this myself?
I had my lesson. I now had knowledge, but could I master the cables of death??? Really, I used to look at those two-headed electric snakes and think, “If I ever tried to use those on my own, I’d probably blow up the car.” I always figured that someone else who knew what they were doing could do it for me. Hey, and I have AAA, so I can always call them and have them do it. But, do I really want to wait an hour for them to arrive?
Not today. I was going to tame the two-toned fang-ed serpent and put it to use. I went into the back of the truck, pulled them out, and confidently asked another woman if she could help me with a jump. I told her that if she could just pull up, keep her car running and pop her hood, I’d take care of the rest. I was educated in the school of Jeff. I knew how to use the cables.
OK, red positive, black negative… positive with positive, negative with negative…
I got in the car, turned the key and…
IGNITION!
I did it! I jumped the truck! I let out a small laugh and said, “It worked!” Then I told the woman that my husband would be proud
.
So, God did answer my prayer. The truck did start up again, and I made it home.
The postscript on this story is that Jeff is now working on trying to figure out and fix the problem. It doesn’t seem to be the alternator or the battery. Pray that God will give him insight.

hi Heather! I am so impressed. I am too scared to do it! Congrats on hitting 90%. That is so cool.
I had to come back and say that Jon Shuler had to jump my car today! I left the lights on, again.
